<image:title>Speakers 2021 - Elina Alterman</image:title>
<image:caption>Elina Alterman officially joined the Lawrence Humane Society in June of 2020. Prior to being named Director of Development & Communications in July 2021, she served as the Senior Manager of Social work, overseeing Lawrence Humane's Pet Resource Center and the community caseworker team. Animal welfare is a professional change for Elina, whose career has spanned philanthropy, nonprofit consulting, direct practice social work, lobbying and government relations, and grassroots organizing. A social worker and grassroots organizer by training, Elina served for five years as program officer at the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF), leading KHF's work around health equity, social determinants of health, and civic and community engagement, including a statewide integrated voter engagement initiative and an intersectional health equity organizing and advocacy movement. Elina then led her own consulting company through which she supported nonprofits, foundations, health care systems and local community groups across the country, building organizational capacity through her experience in campaign development, coalition building, relational organizing and strategic planning. Most important of all, she supported nonprofits in their efforts to comprehensively understand and address diversity, inclusion, systemic racism and their own organizations’ roles in undoing systemic oppression, and figuring out new ways of operating internally and with external partners that center justice and equity. Elina emigrated to the United States with her family in 1991 and grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, establishing deep roots in the community, which was ultimately what brought her back from Washington, D.C., where she had been working on Capitol Hill and later leading government relations for a women’s and family nonprofit. Elina began her career as a foster care social worker and maternity care coordinator in North Carolina. Elina has a bachelor’s degrees in sociology and Latin American and Latino studies from Brandeis University and dual master’s degrees in social work and public health, with a focus on maternal and child health from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Elina lives in Lawrence with her partner, their four senior dogs and nine cats ― the ultimate blended family. She serves on several nonprofit boards, including the local food bank, is a “big sister” through Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and in her spare time volunteers at an equine rescue organization to get her horse and donkey fix.</image:caption>

Before stepping into her current role on the shelter outreach team, Anna worked as the community cat program coordinator for the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of that work, she mentored municipal shelters and rescue partners in the Southeast, worked with commissioners and government leadership to establish best practices for local animal control agencies, and led grassroots efforts to update county ordinances to ensure the continuation of trap-neuter-return programs for Cobb County's community cats. Prior to joining Best Friends, Anna served as an animal control officer and dispatcher for Fulton County Animal Services through LifeLine Animal Project in Atlanta. While she was an ACO, Anna managed Fulton County’s Doghouse Program, providing humane support for pets and proactive assistance to community members in underserved areas. Before diving into the animal protection and sheltering world, Anna worked as a wildlife care supervisor for Aware Wildlife Center, where she oversaw the rehabilitation of wild animals, trained and managed volunteers in animal care, and developed fundraising and community engagement programs. While completing her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Emory University, Anna traveled to northern Tanzania through the School for International Training to study human-wildlife conflict, animal behavior and the wildlife conservation movement. She also managed to pick up a bit of Swahili.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speakers 2022 - Tierney Sain</image:title>
<image:caption>Prior to joining Best Friends in 2013, Tierney spent nearly a decade working and volunteering with various animal shelters and had an affinity for what most would consider difficult dogs. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Colorado, Tierney joined the Dogtown team at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. She quickly became an instrumental member of the team due to her ability to work with, and progress, dogs who had significant behavior challenges. Over time she honed her skills and began to not only create customized behavior and enrichment plans for each individual dog, but also began coaching others, which led to her advancement on the team from caregiver to supervisor. As a supervisor in Dogtown, Tierney oversaw the team who took care of the sanctuary’s most challenging dog population. It was here where Tierney led the team through creative problem solving to enhance and diversify their ability to progress dogs with comprehensive behavior issues. Tierney created protocols for expediting progress with shy dogs, implemented playgroups and played a critical role in population management. On a personal level, Tierney also extended her expertise to help several local shelters with limited resources enhancing their shelter operations and improving the quality of life for their canine populations. As the National Mentorship Program Specialist, Tierney is now able to help more dogs and people by providing support and mentoring to shelters across the country for canine training, enrichment and behavior. Originally from Ohio, Tierney now calls Southeastern Utah her home and spends her free time helping progress project dogs at the sanctuary and hiking and exploring with her adopted dogs.</image:caption>

After KCPP took over in January 2012, adoptions increased by more than 200% and helped elevate KCPP to a live release rate of more than 90% for seven consecutive years while remaining an open-admission shelter, making KC Pet Project one of the largest open-admission no kill shelters in the nation. In 2017, KCPP finished the year with a 96% Live Release Rate. Brent has a Bachelor’s in Journalism from the University of Missouri and a Masters in Marketing Communication from the University of Kansas. Brent lives in Kansas City with his wife Michelle and share their home with both dogs and cats. His outside interests include hiking, bicycling and photography.</image:caption>

Upon learning about the pet store/puppy mill connection and learning about the predatory lending practices that these stores utilize to take advantage of low-income families, Mindi knew that she needed to act. Bailing Out Benji and its research have been instrumental in passing humane ordinances across the country, they have also been one of the driving forces behind exposing the national puppy laundering scheme that is currently happening in numerous states.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speakers 2023 - Vanessa Cowie</image:title>
<image:caption>Vanessa Cowie has long been recognized as a data-driven leader, focused on strategic programming in the animal welfare industry. Vanessa has consistently used analytics to achieve success in shelter operations, and facility remodels, but also in fundraising and grant writing. Originally from Melbourne Australia, Vanessa has worked in animal welfare in Kansas for 12 years, with over half of that time spent as an Executive Director of two medium-sized animal shelters. Vanessa is motivated to grow the mission of an organization to serve as many animals as possible with the resources that are available and do so with a high live release rate. In a world that has an overwhelming number of unwanted animals, and a very limited amount of resources it is critical that we are turning the dials that will generate the most impact for the animals and the people that love them.</image:caption>

She began a private practice residency through the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in late 2020. In addition to her residency, she is continuing her education by earning a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences with an emphasis in Veterinary Science, through Mizzou’s College of Veterinary Medicine Biomed Online program. She is also a Level 3 Fear Free Certified Professional. Dr. Delabar is a co-founder of Pet Wellness Alliance in Columbia, mid-Missouri’s first and only non-profit veterinary practice. Here she practices Fear Free medicine and sees patients for referral behavior care. She hopes to increase access to behavioral support for pets, families, and veterinary and training professionals, and to continue promoting the integration of physical and emotional health of our pets. Dr. Delabar leads a Missouri chapter of the Street Dog Coalition, providing veterinary care for pets of unhoused families. She is also a MO state representative with the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.</image:caption>

With her extensive background, she has honed her skills in implementing groundbreaking programs aimed at reducing the length of stay for animals, enhancing the quality of care within the shelter environment, and breaking down barriers to adoption through open communication strategies. Sydney's unwavering compassion for animals fuels her commitment to improving the lives of both animals and people within her community. She firmly believes that each organization is a unique micro ecosystem, but she advocates for positive change by encouraging teams to engage in crucial conversations about their mission regularly and discussing how they can collectively better the lives of both the pets and the people they serve in the city on a daily basis. Under her leadership, The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City has exemplified how teamwork, dedication, and a shared vision can bring about positive transformations in the lives of animals and the community they serve. From the average length of stay being around 250 days it is now under 15 days for dogs and 17 for cats. Change and improvements are possible with slight shifts in perspectives!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speakers 2024 - James Oppenheimer</image:title>
<image:caption>James Oppenheimer is the Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, an open admission shelter that provides a safe haven to over 8,000 animals a year. Originally from England, James has been in the US for 24 years, spending the past 15 in Sioux Falls. Prior to running the Humane Society, James was the Director of Business Operations and a Staff Coach at Dakota Alliance Soccer Club. James's philosophy of putting people first, treating them with respect, and leading by example led to success both on and off the field. As a coach James has led teams to victory in several national events, priding himself on the way teams he coached played with determination and class. Off the field, he put policies and procedures in place to make Dakota Alliance a professionally run club that is financially stable, treating both players and staff with dignity. In January 2023, James traded soccer balls for fur balls and became the Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. James has created a culture of positivity and transparency. This led to a 35% increase in adoptions in his first year, and a 22% drop in euthanasia. In his spare time, James enjoys spending time kicking a soccer ball around with his daughter Gemma's, rock climbing with his son Henry, and even squeezes in an occasional date with his wife, Marisa.</image:caption>

Her commitment to animal welfare is also exemplified through her work founding the Missouri Coalition of Animal Care Organizations and Midwest Animal Sheltering Conference, ensuring all animal welfare organizations in Missouri have access to the information and relationships they need to succeed. Before working in animal sheltering, Abbie previously served as the Executive Director of National Tiger Sanctuary. In this role, she focused on elevating the standard of care for the animals and implementing new educational initiatives and a wildlife rehabilitation program. <image:title>2025 Speakers - Nick Walton</image:title>
<image:caption>Nick Walton is the National Shelter Support Senior Manager for Best Friends Animal Society and works with officers and shelters nationwide to implement progressive, community-focused practices that support lifesaving within the shelter, as well as increase officer safety and efficiency. Nick started his journey in animal welfare at a pet boarding facility where he was the designated “poop scooper”, and shortly thereafter transitioned to a dog-trainer role within the facility. This naturally led him to devote the next few years of his life to becoming a professional dog trainer in the metro-Atlanta area. While working in Atlanta, he would regularly drive by dogs that needed some help and this led him to Fulton County Animal Services. Nick committed himself to a community-oriented approach to animal welfare enforcement with the goal of changing how the community viewed animal services and its officers. Commonly referred to as the “dog food man” within the inner city of Atlanta, Nick was instrumental in developing trust within the community and becoming a welcome sight throughout underserved areas of the city. Prioritizing this philosophy, as well as utilizing resources such as Pets For Life, allowed Nick to save more lives by keeping pets in their homes and out of the shelter. As a Field Training Officer, he would train new employees on the philosophy of community-engagement, further solidifying this mindset into the culture of FCAS. Working in Fulton County afforded Nick many diverse experiences as an ACO and resulted in his instrumental role in a number of large-scale cruelty cases from voodoo cases to circus animal cruelty. The lifesaving techniques that Nick developed and championed at Fulton County Animal Services represent the next step for animal control field services: a proactive solution-based approach to animal issues with an emphasis on building a supportive and safe community.</image:caption>

With his belief that healthy pets are essential to a humane community the programs he created helped 5809 families in his community to provide care for their pets in 2024. His passion for animal welfare and public policy has driven him to a position on the Vice-President of the National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA), Treasurer (Past President) of the Arkansas State Animal Control Association (ASACA) the Executive Management Committee for the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) and many national advisory panels. In this capacity he helps form best practices, trains animal welfare professionals, assists animal service departments and government officials cross the country to become better representatives within their communities while providing a higher standard for animal welfare and public safety in those communities. Based on Mike’s success in Cabot, Arkansas he has been requested to speak at many national and international conferences over the last 5 years some of which include the Australian National Animal Welfare Conference as the Keynote speaker, the Humane Society of the United States Animal Care Expo as a speaker and panelist, the Best Friends National Conference as a speaker, and numerous state level animal welfare & control association conferences. Mike’s philosophy is one that is based on continued learning in an ever-changing world. As well as learning daily from human and animal welfare leaders across this country Mike holds a Master’s in Business Administration with a minor in Public Administration and as well as a degree in Criminal Justice.</image:caption>
